Orders for the off-road pickup truck are soaring

February 22, 2010

Orders for the special-edition SVT Raptor pickup are flying high and outperforming Ford's expectations. The tricked-out version of the Ford F-150 has attracted more than 5,300 orders.

The SVT Raptor is designed for maximum off-road performane, modeled after the desert racing pre-runner trucks. The truck is far more than an appearance package; it includes components found of professional race trucks, such as triple bypass shocks by FOX Racing and 35-inch BFGoodrich tires.

The Raptor is powered by Ford's 5.4-liter Triton V-8 engine, producing 320 horsepower and 390 ft-lb torque. Available spring 2010 is an all-new 6.2-liter V-8 engine boasting 411 horsepower and 434 ft-lb torque, the most power available in any half-ton pickup.

The truck features a unique grille with large Ford letters across the center, widened front fascia and fenders and functional vents on the hood and fenders. A set of running lamps is discretely mounted along the grill add to the truck's character at night. A full compliment of skid plates protect under body components.

The truck measures a full seven inches wider than a standard F-150, thanks to its upgraded suspension, wheels and tires. The 4-wheel drive suspension has been completely redesigned with new forged steep upper and aluminum lower A-arms, tie rods and half-shafts in front, and a new axle in the rear. The suspension is outfitted with internal triple bypass FOX Racing Shox. The bypass shocks increase damping as the shock compresses to combat hard landings. The result of the new suspension is front travel is over 11 inches and rear travel just over 12 inches. The truck rides and handles well both on- and off-road.

Putting the power to the ground is a set of 35-inch BFGoodrich All-Terrain TA/KO tires, measuring 315/70R17. A special tread compound improves steering and has been made softer to increase traction. The tires are mounted on a set of 17-inch cast aluminum wheels.

While the truck has been popular in typical desert areas of the Southwest, residents of states ranging from Colorado to Tennessee, Michigan and Ohio to Georgia have shown significant demand. Over half the trucks have been ordered in Tuxedo Black, while the remainder ordered as Molten Orange, Oxford White and Blue Flame.
